Smart Growth, Not Gridlock: Addressing the City of Port St. Lucie’s Planning and Traffic Challenges
Infrastructure Costs Due to Unplanned Developments
A 2024 study presented to the Port St. Lucie City Council highlighted that proposed developments in unincorporated St. Lucie County, adjacent to the city’s western boundaries, would significantly impact Port St. Lucie. These developments are expected to necessitate roadway improvements costing up to $280 million. Without proper planning and developer contributions, the city could face a deficit of up to $40 million, burdening taxpayers.
Traffic Congestion from Rapid Growth
Port St. Lucie has experienced rapid population growth, becoming one of the fastest-growing cities in Florida. This surge has led to increased traffic congestion, particularly on major roads like St. Lucie West Boulevard and Gatlin Boulevard. Residents have reported that traffic has worsened over the years, with some comparing it to conditions in larger cities like West Palm Beach.
Mobility Challenges Identified by Residents
In a 2021 community survey, while about 70% of respondents gave high marks to the ease of travel by car and public parking, only about 40% rated the overall quality of the transportation system as excellent or good. Ease of walking and travel by bicycle received even lower positive ratings, indicating a need for improved mobility planning.
